St. Joseph Emergency Family Shelter
Last year, St. Joseph Emergency Family Shelter served 80 families, including 125 men and women and 136 children under the age of 14. The St. Joseph Shelter is the only emergency shelter facility in Polk County which accepts the entire family (both parents/guardians and all of their children), or a single parent of either gender and his or her children. St. Joseph’s provides safe, clean housing for homeless families for a limited stay. Our mission is to honor the humanity of each person by acknowledging the emotional and financial crisis involved when a family finds itself without housing or funds.
Our part-time shelter staff oversees the proper functioning and operation of the St. Joseph Emergency Shelter, including responsibility for receiving guests and performing general housekeeping as described below:
• Monitors house affairs, maintaining order and facilitating the basic needs and activities of house guests.
• Performs housekeeping duties in those areas not assigned to or expected of guests, such as sanitizing rooms after departure of guests.
• Maintains guest relations and hospitality with visitors, in person and through telephone contact.
• Receives incoming guests, conducting intake interviews, explaining house rules and expectations and answering questions.
• Maintains house records and keeps appropriate notes and files.
• Performs any and all household duties necessary to maintain a safe and clean environment.
Flexibility is key for interested applicants. This highly physical job is part-time with shifts assigned on a month-to-month basis based upon the availability of employees. Interested parties should have availability of a minimum of two – three times weekly for the 3:00 – 10:00 p.m. shift all seven days of the week and some shifts may be 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Phoenix House is also accepting applications for part-time shelter advocates particularly Sunday nights from 8:00 p.m. to Monday morning at 7:30 a.m.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-
Provides support to women and children using the shelter and helps families access community resources throughout the city, county and state. Informs backup staff of any immediate emergencies or problems.

Assists with maintenance and upkeep of the shelter facility and reports any repair and/or supply need to Shelter Managers. Completes projects assigned by Shelter managers and completes intakes and exits as needed.

Answers crisis line calls during their shift and maintains security system during shift. Knows and understand how to do fire drills, tornado and/or storm watches, medical emergencies and an evacuation (in case of community crisis).

Prepares daily reports for the staff and the Shelter Managers in the Daily Logbook. Also maintains group living according to shelter policies and prepares rooms for incoming families.

Support Staff (part-time) – St Mary Family Center

This position provides general support to St. Mary Family Center patrons and staff. Assists center manager in oversight of volunteers and in managing the delivery, storage and distribution of food and clothing items. Helps organize and monitors donations, food delivery and distribution systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
•Assists in the operation of the food pantry and clothing program as determined by the St. Mary Family Center manager.
•Welcomes clients and donors upon arrival. Receives donations and assists clients with various needs. Answers questions and responds to inquiries while maintaining a high level of respect and dignity for clients.
•Assists center manager in scheduling, organizing and directing volunteers and provides center orientation and training to new volunteers in coordination with the center manager.
•Provides coverage for St. Mary Family Center in the absence of the center manager and other employees. This may include responsibility for opening the building and closing and securing the building.
•Utilizes data collection software programs to assist clients in receiving personal care items, diapers and food boxes. Collects and tracks additional information or data as needed.
•Assists center manager with procedural and policy compliance.
Additional requirements:
Knowledge of community social services preferred. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of people having diverse social concerns. Ability to adhere to ethics and Catholic Social Teaching. Ability to read, write and speak in English and preferably a second language with preferences for Spanish, Arabic, Burmese, Vietnamese and Swahili.
This position is required to regularly lift or move 10 pounds and frequently lift or move 25 pounds on a regular basis.
