About RCS
In 1995, Catholic Charities joined forces with Lutheran Social Services in Iowa (LSI) to form Refugee Cooperative Services. With recent crisis overseas, the program has worked with Des Moines area churches, businesses and individuals in an effort to resettle families fleeing their home country because of war and persecution.

The staff and volunteers are key to the success of any newly arriving refugee. Sometimes a refugee family arrives with literally just the clothes on their backs. RCM sees that all of the family’s basic needs are met, often even before the family arrives. Volunteers and staff secure housing and furnishings for the family before their arrival in Iowa, assist the newcomers in finding employment, utilizing community resources, understanding the educational system and understanding their new country and its complex culture.
