Survivor Statement Display — Apr 8, 2016
Pictured are: Sarah Miller, Sexual Assault Advocate (and the photographer) and Carrie Potter, Sexual Abuse Coordinator from Catholic Charities Phoenix House in Council Bluffs.
The photographic Survivor Statement Display is currently at Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, IA. The display is in the hospital lobby as well as the emergency room lobby From April 6 through April 16.
The SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) nurses from Jennie Edmundson Hospital have a table in the cafeteria every Friday through April from 11 am to 1:30 pm with information on Sexual Assault Awareness Month and their SANE nursing program and are running the display continuously at the table along with Catholic Charities Phoenix House information and resources.
For this project, survivor statements are the voices of sexual violence survivors. They are the voices and the words that survivors want the world to hear. It may be something that their attacker said to them that has stuck with them. It may be a message to their attacker, to their family/friends, to everyone. It may be how they felt, where they have been, or where they are now. These are real stories, real voices, real awareness. 'Prevention is Possible' is the theme of this year's Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
The next venue for the display is Iowa Western College. The display will be placed in their cafeteria from April 18th through April 22nd in conjunction with other Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities and materials on campus.
