Year of Faith: In Quest of Mary — May 15, 2013
As Catholics dedicate the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Diocese of Des Moines is offering an opportunity during this Year of Faith to gain a greater appreciation of Mary in the life of Jesus and in our own lives as well.
Join author, theologian and scholar Sister Mary Christine Athans, a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. at St. Theresa Church in Des Moines as she shares her humor, research and reflections surrounding Mary, the mother of Jesus. Sister Athans will be sharing from her new book, “In Quest for the Jewish Mary.” Her research and teaching has helped many people from seminarians to people in the pews find the Jewish Mary in history, in scripture and as we journey in faith.
Sister Athans is professor ermerita at the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and currently adjunct faculty at Catholic Theological Union and Loyola University in Chicago.
This Year of Faith event begins at St. Theresa Church, 1230 Merle Hay Road, with a social at 6 p.m. with beverages, fruit and finger sandwiches. Sister Athans begins her presentation at 6:30 p.m. The faith-sharing event is free and childcare will be provided.
