Vicar General

The Vicar General is appointed by the bishop and is responsible for assisting the bishop in the general administration of the diocese.


In the Diocese of Des Moines, this is Father Chris Hartshorn.


Father Hartshorn is originally from Cumming, Iowa and attended St. John’s Church in Cumming. He entered seminary in 1987 and attended St. John Vianney Seminary in St. Paul Minnesota from 1987-1990. He attended North American College in Rome and was ordained to the diaconate in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican on December 18, 1993 and he was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1994 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines.


Fr. Hartshorn His has served in parishes in West Des Moines, Anita, Adair and Casey. In 1998 he began his study of Canon Law at The Catholic University of America and received his JCL degree in 2000. Since that time he served as pastor of St. Joseph Church in Winterset and as Judicial Vicar in the Tribunal Office before being appointed by the bishop as Vicar General. He currently serves as pastor at St. Augustin Parish in Des Moines.
