World Youth Day, Madrid 2011

“Having been a part of World Youth Day three times, I am convinced of the power of this pilgrimage and encourage all young adults of the Diocese of Des Moines to prayerfully consider joining us in 2011.” –Bishop Richard E. Pates

The Diocese of Des Moines took about 60 people on a pilgrimage to Madrid, Spain for World Youth Day, 2011. Hear Bishop's Aug. 26, 2011 radio show in which he talked to folks who made the pilgrimage.

What is World Youth Day (WYD)?

  • WYD is a gathering of more than a million Catholic young adults.
  • WYD is a celebration of our faith, led by Pope Benedict XVI.  The highlight of the event is a papal mass which is expected to draw 2 million people.
  • WYD is a pilgrimage centered around encountering Christ.

Why go on a World Youth Day?

  • Go on WYD to experience the Catholic Church for what it is: the great family of the children of God.
  • Go on WYD to experience Christian love and solidarity.
  • Go on WYD to strengthen your baptismal vocation: the Christian's Universal Call to Holiness.
  • Go on WYD to discover or renew your response to God's love, lived out in your particular vocation.

The diocese partnered with Youth in Europe, founded in response to the desire to be “missionaries with a company.” They shared with us the mission to “evangelize, catechize, and change lives.”

Jason Kurth check sout Madrid in preparation for World Youth Day 2011

Des Moines diocesan WYD coordinator Jason Kurth traveled about a year prior to WYD to Madrid to check out the accommodations. He said the city seems well equipped to handle large crowds with good public transportation and hotels within walking distance of the WYD events.
