A national process is underway to do two things: explain how Hispanic Catholics can help the Church and solicit input from them on how the Catholic Church in the United States can better minister to them. A diocesan encuentro (meaning "encounter") was held in the Diocese of Des Moines. Information gathered from hundreds of people was taken to a regional encuentro April 27-29 in Kansas City, Kansas. Information from various regional encuentro gatherings will be gathered and presented at a national event in September.
A group of more than 40 Hispanic Catholics in the diocese are meeting regularly for the next year to learn about their faith, learn about the Church and how they can become leaders within their faith communities. This is the third and largest class participating in the Instituto de Liderazgo Pastoral through the University of St. Mary of the Lake at Mundelein Seminary in Illinois. From the first two classes, we now have about 50 men and women who have become leaders in their parishes for various ministries and empowered, in consultation with their pastors, to reach out to our Hispanic brothers and sisters so they have the sacraments and are invited to be a part of their faith community.
