New Bishop

On Feb. 12, Des Moines Bishop Richard Pates turned 75 years old. Following Canon law, Bishop Pates sent a letter to Pope Francis letting him know of his birthday. This set off a process that will end with the appointment of the 10th bishop for the Diocese of Des Moines.

As we wait for the appointment of our next bishop, the diocese is praying:

O God, Gentle Shepherd,
you lead your Church to The New Moment with loving care,

You have blessed our diocese time and again with good,

wise, and holy bishops.

We are grateful for Bishop Pates’ ministry to us.

We ask you to bless him as he completes his service

to the Diocese of Des Moines.

Grant us another Bishop who will

inspire the clergy, religious, and laity of the diocese
to work generously with him

so that we might grow together in your love
and continue the good work

you have begun in us for the sake of all people.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
