Are you looking for a new career? A part-time job to supplement your retirement income or ease your transition into retirement? Maybe you’re seeking a second job to help pay the bills, or you’re a teenager hoping to earn spending money or save for college.

Whatever your situation, you want your work to be meaningful. So what do you do?

Disability service organizations use a variety of care models to support individuals with disabilities and their families. At the same time, many organizations face ongoing challenges in finding dedicated employees to provide this care.

Some of the service models include:

  • Hourly respite care, which gives caregivers a short break
  • Weekend respite programs
  • Host home arrangements, similar to a foster care model, where a person with a disability lives in a provider’s home
  • Group home settings, with staff providing shift-based support

The needs of individuals receiving services also vary widely. Some may simply need help developing social skills or transportation to participate in community activities. Others may require additional supervision beyond what a typical peer their age would need. Some individuals need assistance with activities of daily living, while others require more intensive physical care and support. Because of this wide range of needs, there are many different employment opportunities available.

You might:

  • Work full-time as a host home provider and welcome someone into your home
  • Work scheduled shifts in a group home setting
  • Provide part-time hourly respite care to a child or adult
  • Serve one weekend a month in a respite program
  • Fill in one day a week—or even once a month—to give parents or host home providers a much-needed break

There is truly a variety of roles to match your interests, skills, and availability. Whatever your employment needs or schedule considerations, there are opportunities to make a meaningful difference—serving as the hands and feet of Jesus while supporting individuals and families in a vital way.
