Floods: Bishop asking for prayers, financial assistance for those impacted

March 22, 2019

During this period of historic flooding in Iowa and Nebraska, including wide portions of the Diocese of Des Moines, Bishop Richard Pates is urging prayer for those impacted and inviting financial assistance for those in serious need.

Many families have been displaced and some may have lost everything.

Farmers especially have suffered significant loss, a portion of their land is underwater and livestock and grain that was in storage have been affected.

The communities which have been particularly struck are:

  • St. Mary Parish in Hamburg
  • Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish in Glenwood
  • St. Mary Parish in Shenandoah
  • St. Patrick Parish in Missouri Valley
  • Holy Family Parish in Mondamin
  • St. Anne Parish in Logan

Catholic Charities Des Moines is currently working with Catholic Charities USA to identify and coordinate resources and needs in responding to this tragedy.

Bishop Pates encourages financial support at this time either through parish collections or individual donations.  All funds should be sent to:

Diocese of Des Moines Flood Relief, c/o Finance Office, 601 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA  50309

Contributions can be made via credit or debit card online at the following link:  https://dmdiocese.thankyou4caring.org/pages/donation-form---flood-relief

The funds will be allocated in conjunction with other relief efforts in attempting to reach all in need.  Catholic Charities will also work with parish communities and their needs.

If you have an interest in assisting personally or as a parish group, please contact Deb Powers at Catholic Charities at dpowers@catholiccharitiesdm.org

“Please include fervent prayer at all of your Masses for those suffering from this tragedy,”  Bishop Pates asked of all the parish communities in the diocese.  “Those impacted urgently need our solidarity and support.”
