Pope Francis has proclaimed this Wednesday, Jan. 26, as a day of prayer for Ukraine in light of increasing tension in the region and the threat to peace to Europe.

“I make a heartfelt appeal to all people of good will to raise prayers to Almighty God that all political actions and initiatives may be at the service of human brotherhood rather than partisan interests,” said Pope Francis after the Angelus on Sunday, Jan. 23.

There's been a large buildup of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine. On Sunday, Jan. 23, the U.S. State Department urged families at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine to leave. In December, Pope Francis encouraged peace, saying "Weapons are not the way" to resolve conflict.

All are invited to join Bishop William Joensen at the 12:10 p.m. Mass on Jan. 26 at St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines to pray for peace.

Following the conclusion of the daily Mass, the Holy Eucharist will remain exposed for an hour of adoration and silent prayer for peace, concluding with Benediction at 1:45 p.m..  Persons are invited to join us for any portion of this time.
