Priest, Composer, One of Our Own: Hear from Fr. Ross Caniglia at the 2026 Bishop's Celebration of Catholic Schools

by Diocese of Des Moines Catholic Schools | May 12, 2026

Fr. Ross Caniglia will be the guest speaker at the 2026

Fr. Ross Caniglia's path to the priesthood looks nothing like what you might expect, and that's exactly why you need to hear it.

He grew up in Council Bluffs, a product of Saint Albert Catholic School and the Diocese of Des Moines. He went on to earn a degree in atmospheric sciences from Creighton University, and before he ever set foot in a seminary, he was on television working as a weekend meteorologist and multimedia journalist at KTIV in Sioux City.

He was building a career. He had a plan.

God had a different one.

In June 2019, Fr. Ross was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Sioux City, and alongside his ministry, he began doing something that started in childhood — something that Catholic school made possible.

Taking after his mother, who played piano through much of her childhood, Fr. Ross started playing piano in 3rd grade and continued lessons through college.

Today, that gift has found its fullest expression. Fr. Caniglia's compositions have been published through GIA Publications and Oregon Catholic Press (OCP), two of the most respected names in liturgical music in the country, including his Mass of the Epiphany, which has been added to the roster of fine Mass settings being used by congregations nationwide.

His music is heard at Sunday Mass by people who will never know his name. Usually, he’s happy with that anonymity, but for one night, we’re shining a light on his incredible work.

Join us for a look behind the liturgical curtain as Fr. Ross Caniglia presents the keynote address at the 2026 Bishop’s Celebration of Catholic Schools.

2026 Bishop's Celebration: August 29, 2026

On August 29, faculty, staff, and supporters of our 16 diocesan schools will once again gather to celebrate a legacy of academic excellence and faith formation for young learners, and we’re honored to have Fr. Caniglia join this year’s event as featured speaker.

His story is a living answer to the question every Catholic school parent, teacher, and donor quietly asks: Does this really matter? Does what happens in these classrooms stay with a child?

It does.

The keynote address is always a highlight of the evening. Last year’s was no exception, as Dr. Brandy Ficek (also a Saint Albert graduate) delivered an inspiring message about how even the smallest gifts can make a life-changing impact.

The evening also honors our 2026 Teacher, Administrator, and Volunteer of the Year, as well as the bishop’s honored guests: the Catholic Tuition Organization and its donors, which have provided tuition assistance to countless students over the past 20 years.

This year’s event will raise funds to support the needs of diverse learners in our schools. Every dollar raised helps us invite another child into our schools, another child whose story we don't yet know.

Please join Bishop William Joensen and Fr. Ross Caniglia on August 29. Come to be reminded of why this work is worth doing and to make sure it continues.
