In January 2026, at the conclusion of a civil process, the Diocese of Des Moines initiated a canonical penal trial against Reverend Thomas Thakadipuram. This canonical process did not replace but supplemented the civil consequences related to the theft of parish funds.

Father Thakadipuram was found guilty of theft of ecclesiastical goods, illegal administration, and abuse of office at the conclusion of the trial this summer.

The penalties imposed by the Church court are as follows:

  • He cannot be a signatory to accounts which contain church goods.
  • He cannot participate in financial management for 10 years.
  • He must participate at his own expense in a rehabilitation program for those convicted of financial misconduct within the next 12 months.
  • He is to report to the Bishop of Des Moines about his compliance.

To repair damages, Father Thakadipuram will pay restitution to the Diocese for financial losses not covered by insurance.

The Diocese of Des Moines is grateful to all those who assisted in both the civil and canonical processes. While we have worked toward the restoration of justice, we recognize that it is beyond any legal process to ultimately heal wounds inflicted by misconduct. Please join us in praying for an outpouring of grace, healing and reconciliation.
